New York has Been Surging with Solar Developments in Q1 2020

By the end of 2019, the state of New York had achieved a solar capacity of 2 gigawatts. And the state is on track to up that number significantly in 2020. The first quarter alone has seen many solar project completions and announcements.

All of this activity has been in an effort to meet New York’s goal of having a 6 gigawatt capacity by 2025, and having 70% of its electricity come from renewable sources by 2030.

Bogart Solar Brings Community Solar to Greene County

The Bogart Solar project became operational in early February. Totaling 3 megawatts, the community solar build is allowing the people of Catskill to enjoy the benefits of solar energy, even if they can't get solar installations themselves.

Catskill’s new installation is capable of powering more than 300 homes in a single year. The project was made possible by Generate and Cypress Creek Renewables.

Solstice Opens 2 New Community Solar Farms

Early March saw the finalization of two big community solar projects led by Solstice. Located in Orange and Ulster counties, the two installations are ready to power as many as 800 homes throughout the neighboring regions. That’s about 6 megawatts total.

The farms should help local residents see a 10% reduction on their utility bills.

Upstate NY Will See 17 New Solar Projects

By 2024, the upstate region will have 17 new solar projects fully operational. Governor Cuomo announced in mid-March that there would be projects kicked off in multiple regions: a 19.99 megawatt build in Greenwich, a 200 megawatt facility in Conquest, and many more.

It’s predicted that all of these new facilities will produce more than 2.5 million megawatts per year. That will be sufficient to power over 350,000 homes.
